Biopsies
If you or your dentist discover an abnormal area of tissue in your mouth, such as a lump, growth, or persistent sore, your dentist may refer you to our care for a biopsy. A biopsy involves our surgeon thoroughly examining the area in question and removing a small piece of the affected area or if necessary, an entire growth. This procedure is administered under local anaesthetic and should not cause any discomfort to you. Usually only a small sample is required and any sutures used will dissolve on their own over the next week.
The sample is then sent to a lab to determine any possible causes for the growth. Biopsy results are ready in 2-3 weeks, at which point we will ask you to return to our office for our surgeon to deliver your results and discuss any options for further treatment.
